Mosquito Control

City of Mitchell Mosquito Control Program consists of the Park Department surveying any standing water in the City of Mitchell and one mile outside City limits for mosquito larvae and treating these areas to help control the mosquito population. We also put up light and CO2 traps all around town which run at night and collect mosquitos. We, then, count the mosquitos and determine if they are Flood mosquitos, or conversely,  the Culex tarsalis mosquitos, which can carry the West Nile Virus. We use this data from the traps to determine population of mosquitos to follow the trends and life cycle of the mosquito to determine when the next outbreak could happen. Once these numbers hit the set thresholds, this will determine when we would spray the City at night.
